The Chennai Smart Protein Project

We are excited to be part of The Chennai Smart Protein Project, a city-level student community focusing on expanding awareness, education, research and innovation for the smart protein sector in India. Students from universities across Chennai, including the Indian Institute for Technology (IIT) Madras boasts a strong research culture paired with exceptional lab facilities. Our group’s faculty advisor, Meiyappan Lakshmanan, works on cultivated meat research. In addition, IIT Madras has many courses and faculty specializing in disciplines that are relevant to alternative protein science, such as bioprocessing. Students of IIT Madras are environmentally-conscious and focused on a sustainable future for all, as evidenced by the formation of the Plant-Based Society, an active student organization dedicated to promoting plant-based diets. We also have access to a Bioincubator in our research park that provides guidance and funding to startups. For these reasons, we believe IIT Madras is truly fertile ground to become an alternative protein hub.
