About
The State University of Campinas (UNICAMP) Alt Protein Project’s mission is to forge a united and inclusive group that fosters rich scientific discussions and disseminates information that supports the advancement of the alternative protein field. We host meetings and enable partnerships between our university and industries, with the ultimate goal of supporting research and development of alternative proteins — making knowledge, technologies and products more accessible.
UNICAMP is a public research university located in the country’s biotech hub, São Paulo, and is known for its startup culture driven by student and professor initiatives. UNICAMP is responsible for roughly 15% of all research conducted in Brazil and produces more patents than any other research organization in the country.
The Faculty of Food Engineering (FEA) at UNICAMP is well-known in the food segment in Latin America. The FEA is specialized in training professionals to develop new technologies and innovation that influence public policies and generate advances for society. The FEA currently offers the discipline “Alternative Proteins: Made from Plants, Fermentation and Cultivated Meat” within the graduate program. UNICAMP aligns its mission and values to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations, which reverberates in institutions throughout the university, as well as in the FEA. Lastly, UNICAMP partnered with GFI Brasil to develop a HACCP (Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points) plan for cultivated meat.
