About

The Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) Alt Protein Project is a pioneering student association started by students in the Bioprocess Engineering Technology Division at the School of Industrial Technology. At USM APP, we are committed to leading the way in this exciting field, driven by our passion for improving food security and sustainability. The USM APP aspires to be a student community at the forefront of cultivating a more sustainable and ethical future for meat production that is also representative of our nation’s multiracial demographic background. We hope to explore the limitless possibilities of alternative protein technology and create a positive impact on our society and environment. 

Our university has set a remarkable precedent for cultivated meat research and education with its trailblazing initiatives. USM proudly holds the distinction of being the first Malaysian university to introduce a Professional Certificate in Cultivated Meat. This program equips participants with cutting-edge knowledge and skills, positioning them as frontrunners in the evolution of the food industry.

Moreover, our university has cemented significant ties within the cultivated meat sector through its collaboration with the key industrial partner, Cell Agritech Sdn Bhd. The signing of a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) marks the beginning of a collaborative journey aimed at revolutionizing cultivated meat production in Malaysia. Our university actively contributes to the industry’s growth by engaging in roundtable discussions with not only our industrial partner but also other universities. These discussions led to the formation of the Malaysia Cellular Agriculture Association, and our university proudly stands as one of the founding members which plays a pivotal role in shaping the future of food production. USM APP firmly believes in the power of collaboration with industry leaders. Lastly, USM is located within the Northern Region Economic Corridor (NCER) in Penang, where the first Malaysian cultivated meat production plant is being built.
